Sobadhanavi Power Plant is a landmark addition to Sri Lanka’s power generation portfolio and represents a major milestone in the country’s transition towards lower-emission thermal power generation. The 350 MW Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-fired Combined Cycle Power Plant, located in Kerawalapitiya, is among the largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects in the country and the first to be designed for LNG-based operation, supporting the national shift from conventional liquid fuel-based thermal generation to cleaner energy sources.
The plant was developed in two phases, with the Open Cycle Gas Turbine phase commissioned in 2024 and the Combined Cycle phase — incorporating a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) and Steam Turbine — achieving full combined cycle commercial operation in 2025, delivering a total installed capacity of 350 MW to the national grid.
Lakdhanavi Limited executed the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) scope of the project and, upon commissioning, undertook the long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of the facility under a contract aligned with the full term of the 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
